Every puzzle starts as a grid of numbers that looks like nothing at all. Follow the key, give each cell the mark its number asks for, and an autumn scene gradually surfaces: a pumpkin, a covered bridge, a turkey making its entrance.

The six instructions are the whole system. Leave a cell blank, add a dot, draw a slash or a cross, make a three stroke star, or fill it in. The marks themselves create the shading, which is why you can start without any drawing experience and without a drawer full of colored pens.
